The best ChatGPT alternatives

ChatGPT is the assistant most people already use, with always-on agents (dots) on its top plans. If you want something better at a particular job, an assistant inside your Google apps, or one that lives in your texts and group chats instead of an app you open, here are the ones worth trying.

Updated 31 October 2026. Every option is checked against its own site; sources are at the foot of the page.

Why look past ChatGPT

What ChatGPT doesn't do.

You go to it

ChatGPT lives in its own apps, plus Slack and Teams on business plans. There's no iMessage, and WhatsApp works in the EEA only.

Group chats are gone

OpenAI stopped new ChatGPT group chats on 9 July 2026; the ones left are winding down.

Its agents start at $100

Dots, OpenAI's always-on agents, come with Pro (from $100 a month) and Business Premium seats.

Your chats can train its models

On personal plans, OpenAI uses your content to train its models unless you opt out; business workspaces are excluded by default.

What it is
AI agents you text on iMessage and WhatsApp, mention in Slack or email, and add to your group chats, where they keep every message and file and follow up on what people promised.
Where it works
iMessage and WhatsApp (one-to-one and group chats), Slack, email and a web app
What it costs
300 free credits to start with a card at sign-up, then $25 for 200 credits when you run low, or plans from $99 a month. Credits are shared across the workspace and roll over.

Questions

ChatGPT alternatives, answered.

What is the best alternative to ChatGPT?

For writing and code, Claude. Inside Gmail and Docs, Gemini. For research with sources, Perplexity. For an assistant in your texts and group chats that does work in your apps and joins your meetings, Cicada.

Is there a ChatGPT alternative that works in WhatsApp or iMessage?

Yes. Cicada works in iMessage and WhatsApp, one-to-one and in group chats, and Poke works in iMessage, WhatsApp and Telegram. ChatGPT itself is on WhatsApp in the EEA only, as of October 2026.

Is there a free alternative to ChatGPT?

Claude, Gemini and Perplexity all have free plans, and Muse is free for most use where Meta offers it. Cicada starts free with 300 credits; a card is taken at sign-up and nothing is charged until you run low.

What happened to ChatGPT group chats?

OpenAI began retiring them on 9 July 2026: you can't create or join a new one, and existing ones are becoming read-only. Cicada works in your iMessage and WhatsApp groups: it keeps every message and file, answers when someone names it, and answers several people who tag it in one reply.

Is there a ChatGPT alternative that doesn't train on my chats?

On personal ChatGPT plans you can opt out, and business workspaces aren't used by default. Cicada doesn't use workspace content to train models.
